    Internal linking for service websites: from page roles to a controlled link plan

    Internal linking is often reduced to a target number of links pointing at important pages. That does not create a coherent architecture. A link should offer a useful next step, communicate topical context and lead to a technically suitable destination.

    Define page roles and topic ownership

    Assign every URL a role: primary service, sub-service, industry, location, guide, case study or conversion page. Then define the search intent and user task. Two destinations with the same purpose cannot be separated reliably through anchor wording. Resolve significant overlap in the page strategy first.

    Select source and destination pages

    A useful source has topical relevance and a genuine reason to offer the next step. Assess possible sources by relevance, entry activity, position in the journey, current depth, freshness of the surrounding section and links already present.

    Destinations should return 200, be indexable and self-canonical when intended for search. Do not plan links to redirects, errors, technical parameters or unverified URL variants.

    Separate navigation from contextual links

    Navigation, breadcrumbs and footers establish hierarchy and global access. Contextual links explain a specific relationship. A service linked only from the footer remains difficult to place. A knowledge area with many isolated links but no parent navigation can still be structurally unclear.

    Write natural anchor text

    Google recommends relevant and reasonably concise labels. “Click here” or repeated “Learn more” does not explain the destination. Natural anchors name it as precisely as the sentence requires, such as “technical SEO analysis”, “Google Ads campaigns” or “brand style guide”.

    Not every link needs the same exact keyword. Vary wording when context requires it without constructing artificial synonym chains. The sentence should work even if search engines did not exist.

    Link where the question arises

    Place a useful link near the content that creates the next information need. Avoid unqualified link blocks and several competing links in one sentence.

    Common relationships include:

    • guide to relevant service;
    • service to deeper guide;
    • case study to the solution used;
    • sub-service to parent service;
    • related services where audiences genuinely overlap;
    • location page to the central service explanation.

    Maintain a link register

    Record source, destination, planned anchor, section, purpose, technical status, publication status and validation date. This separates planned links from live links, particularly when articles and destination pages launch at different times.

    Run technical checks

    Verify the response, final URL, canonical, indexability, robots controls, correct language, self-links, duplicates and crawlable <a href> implementation. A sitemap does not prove indexation; crawls, Search Console and live checks provide different evidence.

    Audit by problem type

    Look for excessive depth, orphaned URLs, links to redirects and errors, repeated template anchors, wrong-language destinations, generic text and guides with no route to a relevant service. Prioritise by importance, reach and confidence.

    Measure without false precision

    Review crawl access, depth, relevant source pages, actual clicks, Search Console destinations, journeys towards conversion and selected canonicals. A ranking change is rarely attributable to one link alone. Compare cohorts and record concurrent changes.

    A link plan is ready when every relationship has a user purpose, both URLs are verified, the anchor describes the destination and technical signals agree. After publication, run a focused crawl. Good internal links connect topics, support decisions and make important pages accessible from relevant contexts.
